First, let's give SRP (Salt River Project) in Arizona a big thank you for compiling this information that we will be sharing in this blog.
Your Red Door Team members have spent many hours over the last couple of months delivering Water Safety Kits provided by SRP and Banner Children's Cardon Children's Medical Center to many of our neighbors. If you weren't one of the lucky ones to have us knock on your door, give us a call and we'd be happy to bring one by to you. As we enter into our summer months in earnest, we are proud to partner with these and other institutions to make sure we help get the message out about water safety!
Arizona is second in the nation for drownings and there is much that can be done to prevent each and everyone one of those drownings. We hear many messages, year round, about watching children around water and that message remains true. There is however, another message. Every year more than twice the number of teens and adults in Arizona lose their lives in water related incidents than children.
Pools, lakes, rivers, canals. Each of these sources are a potential danger. Teens and adults alike tend to overestimate their swimming abilities, water conditions such as unseen objects or underestimated depth can contribute. Alcohol, drugs or medications can be a contributing factor. Life jackets should always be used in larger bodies of water as well.
The most common element in adult water-related accidents is swimming alone! So, to make yourself "drown proof" adults need to follow these easy rules...
1. Never swim alone and NEVER swim impaired
2. Always tell someone prior to going into the pool or hot tub.
3. Be aware of the side effects of medications - especially those that may cause you to feel drowsy.
4. Be aware the alcohol and any kind of water-related activity DO NOT MIX! Hot water temperatures can even speed up the effects of alcohol.
