Best Plants For Springtime In Phoenix

Spring is always a very special time in Phoenix and the Sonoran Desert!  Right now, after so much rain, the desert is entirely golden from Brittlebrush blooming and in town, all of the Palo Verde Trees are the same, covered in yellow blooms!  Having a background in Landscape Architecture, I am often asked what are the best plants to plant in your yard!  Here are my top choices!

1.  I love trees!  Just ask my husband, I cry if they are trimmed badly or need to be cut down!  When you're planning your yard, start with your tree first.  My favorites are Palo Verde Desert Museum which is an absolute dream!  There are no thorns on this variety of Palo Verde and their blooms are HUGE compared to the other types found around town.  Desert Museums also grow very quickly which is both good and bad.  Great in that they grow large quickly, bad in that their limbs can be very brittle.  Another favorite is the Honey Mesquite which has a willowy look to it with snake-like branches, very picturesque!

2. A great shrub that can grow tall and wide is the Tecoma Stans - Orange Jubilee! This is a feathery looking shrub that has large trumpet like orange blooms that again grows quickly and blooms for most of the spring and summer. There are other colors available including the Sun Devil (for ASU) and a yellow bloom as well.

3. Penstemons are an all-time fave of mine and come in a wide variety of pinks, purples, oranges and reds. They are very prolific and will reseed very easily and multiply every year so if you like them as much as I do, they are perfect!  They do die back every year and don't grow very tall.  One of the smallest plants add the perfect amount of color to your yard!

4.  Another that I don't particularly care for the look but the smell is amazing is the orange tree!  Orange Blossoms in spring time are a staple and all of us Phoenicians love the smell that signals springtime!

And then of course after we look at all the pretty flowers, we need some sculpture and structure within our garden and there is no going wrong with any agave, yucca or prickly pear!  We've been trained to balance out the softness of the perennials and the color of the flowers with the structure that succulents can bring to any yard, garden or design!
